Book review: How to ADHD by Jessica McCabe

How To ADHD book by Jessica McCabe, with a slug fidget creature on top

How To ADHD by Jessica McCabe is a great overview of issues for people with ADHD (and those who care about them). I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult about a year ago after rejecting diagnosis and meds when I was ten. Why did I reject diagnosis and meds then? Because I was not satisfied with what the school counselor told me about the condition, which was that I had trouble paying attention and that meds would fix that. Jessica McCabe took the path not taken by me, and benefited from it. But in both cases, we needed more than meds. We needed a larger context for how to live with ADHD. This larger context now exists because of online communities of people with ADHD, and McCabe's YouTube channel is one of these hubs for community.

As a person with ADHD, McCabe has a personal stake in negotiating challenges in living with ADHD. At the same time, she is diligent at finding and promoting evidence-based studies, and integrating these into an understanding of ADHD. I am also impressed at how she prioritizes key areas of concern: sleep, work, emotions, relationships, intersectional conditions, etc., for topics and solutions which can be applied by a wide group of people. McCabe does a great job of keeping an affirming and positive tone while doing justice to the challenges of ADHD.

I recommend this book to anyone with ADHD, as well as to loved ones and parents of those with ADHD.

FYI: I bought the book myself because I value the work McCabe does in the ADHD community.
